Mr Zahawi was born in Baghdad to Kurdish parents and his family came to the UK when he was nine years old.

Nadhim Zahawi Biography: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson named the Education Secretary, Nadhim Zahawi, as the new Finance Minister late on Tuesday. Earlier, Rishi Sunak of Indian origin had resigned from the post of Finance Minister. Downing Street said that Queen Elizabeth II has approved Jahavi’s appointment. Born in Iraq, Jahvi came to Britain as a child with his Kurdish family, who did not speak English, before pursuing a lucrative business career.

The 55-year-old co-founded the leading polling company YouGov. He was active in local conservative politics in London before becoming an MP in 2010. He received widespread praise for monitoring Britain’s pandemic vaccine rollout.

Rishi Sunak resignedfrom the post of Finance Minister on Tuesday. Soon after the resignation of UK Health Minister Sajid Javid, Indian-origin Sunak shared his resignation letter on Twitter. Sunak tweeted, “The public rightly expects the government to run properly, efficiently and seriously.”

Kurdish parents gave birth to Nadhim in Baghdad in 1967. He is 55 years old. When he was nine years old, his family fled Iraq under Saddam Hussein’s reign because they feared persecution. He was raised in Sussex and received his education at University College London and King’s College School in West London, where he majored in Chemical Engineering.

Zahawi has been reported by a friend, Tim Montgomerie, to come from a Muslim background, but has avoided making any statements about his religion.

He established YouGov in 2000, a well-known market research organisation that has since gained notoriety for the accuracy of its political polling. YouGov has grown from its humble beginnings in Nadhim’s garden shed office to a global company with over 400 employees. In 2005, he listed the business on the London Stock Exchange, and in 2008, Ernst & Young honoured him as Entrepreneur of the Year.

  • He resigned from his position at YouGov in January 2010 in order to contest for Stratford-on-seat Avon’s in parliament. Nadhim was elected to the Business, Innovation and Skills Select Committee after securing the position, which examines how government policy affects business.
  • He wrote Masters of Nothing in 2011 with fellow MP Matt Hancock. The book finishes with policy suggestions meant to avert another disaster. It is an account of the human behaviour that led to the banking crash. The Coalition Government adopted a number of these recommendations.
  • He was chosen to serve on the Prime Minister’s Policy Board in 2013 with a focus on business and the economy. He was chosen in June 2014 to serve on the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, which studies the foreign policies of the administration. In 2015, Nadhim was chosen again to serve on this select committee. David Cameron appointed Nadhim as the Prime Minister’s Apprenticeship Adviser in November of 2015.
  • Nadhim was appointed by Theresa May, the prime minister, as the Department of Education’s Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in January 2018. He was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Industry in July 2019. In November 2020, he was appointed Minister for COVID-19 Vaccine Deployment.
  • Nadhim was named Secretary of State for Education in September 2021.
