I am reaching out to you and the Kurdish community on behalf of my friend, Dr. Shahin Nouri, to help us save his life today and potentially that of many others in the Kurdish community in the future.
Shahin, a resident of New York, is a 57-year-old Iranian neurologist of Kurdish origin who has an aggressive form of blood cancer—lymphoma that can only be cured with a blood stem cell donation from a healthy 18 – 44 year old donor from Kurdish, Iranian, or related ethnicities. Unfortunately, an optimal stem cell match has not yet been found. Our next hope is to find a matched donor of Kurdish, Iranian, or related ethnicity for Shahin before mid-October.
Currently over 18,000 patients in the US await a matched stem cell donor for life-saving treatment of their blood and immune system cancers, including leukemia and lymphoma. However, minorities, especially people of Middle Eastern origin, are extremely under-represented in the national stem cell and bone marrow registries, comprising less than 1% of registered donors in the US. Increasing that percentage can save the lives of many who share our ethnicity around the world.
Our hope is not only to save Shahin’s life, but also to bring awareness to the Kurdish and other ethnically diverse communities and inspire more donors to join registries.
To achieve this, we would be very grateful for your help in reaching out to the Kurdish community.
· Please share our message with your organization’s contacts in Kurdish communities.
· We need your help in organizing in-person stem cell donor drives at venues and events in US cities with Kurdish communities. Our donor drives are coordinated with the nonprofit organization Be The Match®, which manages the largest and most diverse blood registry in the world.
· Please amplify our message online and on social media (@Hope4Shahin) to increase awareness and registrations.
As Shahin’s friends and family, we have created ShahinsWings.org, an international campaign to reach as many donors as possible as soon as possible.
More about stem cell donations: See Be The Match https://bethematch.org/
The testing process is done through a mailed cheek swab and the donation is through a noninvasive filtration of circulating blood stem cells, even when a match happens, it is completely optional to proceed with donation. The donation process is confidential and also at no-cost to donors.
To register in the US visit our Be The Match’s page at https://my.bethematch.org/Shahin
For information on joining registries in other countries see our website at https://www.shahinswings/other-countries
I urge you to please contact us at info@shahinswings.org at your earliest convenience as time is of the essence.
We look forward to answering your questions, and discussing how we can partner on this life-saving campaign as soon as possible.
With gratitude,
